Emmy-winning creative has previously worked with the indie on titles including A Real Bug’s Life
Plimsoll Studios has appointed award-winning film maker Nathan Small as creative director for the company’s natural history and kids & family output.

He will replace Alex Ranken who was recently appointed as commissioning editor at National Geographic (12 October).
Small served as producer director and cinematographer on Plimsoll’s A Real Bug’s Life for Disney+, for which he won an Emmy award, and he was also producer director on the indie’s Nightmares of Nature for Netflix, and on Wildstar’s Underdogs for Nat Geo. Most recently, he was series director on ITV’s World’s Wildest Cities, also made by Plimsoll.
In a statement, Plimsoll said Small would bring his distinctive visual style and cross-genre storytelling approach to the company’s slate.
He will report directly to Mark Brownlow, Plimsoll’s head of natural history.
Brownlow said: “Nathan is an exceptional filmmaker with a truly distinctive creative voice. He has an extraordinary ability to make natural history feel fresh, cinematic and surprising, and his work consistently finds new ways to engage audiences.”
Small began his career as an advertising photographer, but moved into filmmaking after completing an MA in Directing and Producing Science and Natural History at the National Film and Television School.
He said: “The company has an extraordinary appetite for ambitious, innovative storytelling, and I’m looking forward to working with our talented teams to find new ways to tell stories about the natural world that captivate, entertain and connect with audiences.”
His appointment follows a reorganisation at Plimsoll which has structured the company’s output around five creative divisions: natural history & adventure, live, entertainment, kids & family, and digital. According to the company, the new structure reflects the continued growth and diversification of its business.
